Allergy on your nipples

Red rashes or allergic reactions might be a notice of infections, and even cancer.

Wrinkled skin

If the tissue around the breasts gradually contracts, it can demonstrate stopped up lymph nodes, which again can cause cancer.

You Need to STOP Putting Toilet Paper on Public Toilet Seats for This Disgusting Reason!

You Need to STOP Putting Toilet Paper on Public Toilet Seats for This Disgusting Reason!

ou really have tried to hold in your bladder, but you just can’t any longer. Yeah, we know the feeling. And finally, you decide to go to the nearest public toilet and start fighting with a lot of germs. Well, don’t worry. You are not the only one going through this.

Half of the whole female population in U.S.A doesn’t sit on a toilet seat in a public toilet. Some chose to put a layer of toilet paper on the toilet seat before sitting on it in order to protect themselves from bacteria, not knowing actually that by so doing, they expose themselves at bacteria even more.

HOW SO?

Toilet seats are made to avoid hanging on bacteria on them for a long period of time. On the contrary, toilet paper is designed not to resist contamination from Escherichia coli and other bacteria.

Each time you flush, bacteria sprays in the air and lands on everything around within 6 ft. Some of them, land on the toilet seat, but because of its curves and its non-absorbent nature, bacteria can’t stay on the seat for too long. On the other hand, the bacteria can land on the toilet paper at most 3 ft away, because it’s extremely good for hanging of the bacteria. In fact, that’s why we use the toilet paper, you know.

According to the popular health show called ‘The Doctors’, who made a list of dirtiest items in the bathroom, it was proven that the toilet paper dispenser was on the top of that list. Toilet paper producers constantly improve the quality of the toilet paper making it more absorbent.

The same case is with toilet seat covers.

In fact, putting a toilet seat cover or making one from a toilet paper only make you feel protected than it actually protects you from bacteria.

Therefore, the best solution is to carry your own disinfectant wipes to clean the toilet seat before sitting on it.

With The Help Of This Remedy You Can Make Your Knee And Back Pain Disappear

With The Help Of This Remedy You Can Make Your Knee And Back Pain Disappear

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, knee pain and back pain are the most common pains. As people age, these pains become more and more common. Luckily, we have the remedy that will help you to get rid of these pains.

First of all, read on to find out the causes of knee and back pain and then you’ll find out how to prepare the amazing gelatin mixture.

5 REASONS FOR YOUR STIFFNESS & PAIN

Trauma: It’s common to blame the aging process on your aches and pains, but if you’ve injured yourself in the past, in many cases your current pain may actually be stemming from an old trauma that was not properly dealt with. With impact trauma an injury can be active in your body for years and can create enough stiffness to get your attention.

Repression: Studies actually show that pain can be both psychological or emotional in origin. In the act of repression, we use our own muscles to hold back our emotions – not all pain is purely physical in nature. Chronic pain could be linked to repressed psychological or emotional stress that is directly causing your muscle tension.

Stress: Pay attention to how your shoulders and neck tense up when you are put under pressure, and think about how we tend to be shallow breathers when stress levels are high. While our natural stress response is designed to help us respond when we are faced with a fear, whether the fear is actual or imaginary, one of the consequences is for your muscles to harden. If you’re not taking time to detox stress and recharge, daily pain and stiffness can be a consequence.

Inactivity: Movement is probably the most essential aspect in keeping your body feeling free and flexible. When we activate our muscles it makes our tissues warm and in a more fluid state. If we go days or weeks without making the time to exercise and move – we actually are creating stiffness. Neglecting daily exercise and movement has been shown speed up the aging process and additionally put you at risk for age-related disorders such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and musculoskeletal disorders.

Contractive Movement: One thing that may just be worse than inactivity is taking part in the wrong kind of movements. Muscle stiffness after exercise is usually the result from low level micro-trauma or small tearing of the muscle fibers – caused by the stress factor of exercise. Not only is it important to ensure that you are performing exercises correctly, but it is also important to avoid over-training. More is not always better and you don’t need high-intensity workouts to see results. It’s important to balance out your lifestyle by including activity such as therapeutic yoga flows and core work such as pilates.

In addition to evaluating the true root cause for your pain and stiffness, there are also functional foods that you can include in your daily routine that have a potential to provide many benefits; from decreasing inflammation, healing your joints and repairing damage.

FUNCTIONAL FOODS FOR JOINT PAIN

Whether you just have the occasional joint pain or a more chronic case of arthritis, there are certain foods that can help. One that has become more well known recently is GELATIN. Try using it in this simple juice recipe:

  • 1 organic cucumber, juiced
  • 2 cups organic coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons organic gelatin
  • 1 teaspoon organic ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon organic turmeric powder (add a pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon raw organic honey

Mix together and enjoy chilled.

WHAT IS GELATIN EXACTLY?

Short and simple: gelatin is essentially ‘cooked collagen’. In the natural process of making homemade bone broth you are focusing all your cooking energy on extracting the wondrous natural collagen, proline, glutamine and glycine from the bones and ligaments. You can see the gel-like characteristics of the cooked collagen (aka gelatin) when your homemade broth cools.

Collagen is our most abundant protein in the body, especially what’s known as type 1 collagen – which is found in our bones, muscles, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. Collagen is what helps give our skin youthfulness: strength, regeneration & elasticity. When it comes to our joints and tendons, collagen is like the glue that works to hold the body together.

As we age our natural collagen production does decline. It can decline even faster if we aren’t following a clean eating routine and if we neglect making time for holistic lifestyle practices that include your daily movement, stress management, proper hydration and adequate sleep. The rate at which our skin wrinkles and sags may be accelerated and our joints may become weaker due to a decrease in healthy cartilage.

If you feel like you’ve got a set of “skeleton legs”, which feel extra stiff and cause you pain when during movement – this can be a clear indicator for a loss of collagen. When we lose collagen, our tendons and ligaments are no longer moving with ease.

Move without pain by focusing on collagen! Add this healing complex protein to your routine, think of it as adding oil to a squeaky door hinge. Collagen works to help your joints move more easily and without the pain. Studies are even finding collagen to be an effective treatment method in osteoarthritis and other joint pain and disorders.

TYPES & SOURCES OF COLLAGEN

It’s important to know that there at least 16 different types of collagen found in the body. Of these different types, between 80 and 90 percent consist of types #1, 2, and 3. This is important to know, as different forms of collagen are found in certain foods and collagen supplements. Here’s the breakdown of our top 3 most abundant forms of collagen:

Type 1: Our most abundant by far, and considered the strongest. Type 1 forms tendons, ligaments, organs and skin. Type 1 also helps form bones and can be found within the GI tract. Essential in wound healing and adding elasticity to the skin.

Type 2: Primarily works to build cartilage and is also found in our connective tissues. Joint health relies on cartilage made of type 2 collagen. Researchers have found that supplementing with type 2 collagen helps patients with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Type 3: Makes up our organs and skin. Usually found with type 1 – it helps to give our skin elasticity and firmness. It also forms blood vessels and tissue within the heart.

Different sources of collagen will contain different types, here are our top sources and how they differ:

Bovine (Cow/Beef): Coming from cows and more specifically from their skin, bones and muscles. Bovine Collagen contains mostly types 1 and 3 collagen and additionally contains glycine and proline, which are useful in creatinine production, building muscle and also helping the body make its own collagen.

Chicken: This source provides type 2 collagen, which is best for building cartilage. Chicken collagen is beneficial for joint health, especially since this source also provides chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate.

Fish: Providing mostly type 1 collagen, with the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Because type 1 collagen can be found throughout our entire body, consuming more fish collagen has been associated with benefits for the joints, skin, vital organs, blood vessels, digestion and bones.

Egg Shell Membrane: Found in the shells and whites of eggs, this source contains mostly type 1 collagen and also provides glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and various amino acids that benefit building connective tissue, wound healing, building muscle mass and reducing pain/stiffness.

COLLAGEN VS GELATIN SUPPLEMENTS

Collagen and gelatin are essentially the same, they have a mirrored amino acid and protein content profile – what makes them different is how they are to be used and how they are digested.

Gelatin powder has a gel-like consistency when prepared. You can use gelatin powder to make gut-healing gummies, gelatin-based desserts, jello and you can add it to your baking to create a chewy consistency. You’ve got to have a game plan when using gelatin, as pure gelatin powder will only dissolve in hot water and it will always create that gummy consistency. For someone who doesn’t have strong digestion, gelatin is not the best suited option, as it can be troublesome to breakdown.

Collagen powders – which go by the name of hydrolyzed collagen or collagen hydrolysate are processed in a different way than gelatin. The collagen is heated to a higher temperature and is then treated with enzymes – which breaks the bonds between the amino acids. Collagen powders may be more easily broken down in the body, when compared to gelatin, and it is better for those with weaker or stressed digestion. Collagen powder can dissolve in both cold and hot liquids and it does not create a gel-like consistency. Scoring a 10/10 in my books for usability: the fact that you can add it to almost anything without introducing a new taste or texture makes this an easy to use product with so much positive potential.

Bone broth is your most natural option and is also the easiest on digestion.

BONUS HEALTH BENEFITS FOR COLLAGEN USE

GLOWING SKIN

Collagen might already be an ingredient in your skin care products but topical absorption for collagen is close to none- when you use collagen internally, this protein works to significantly repair and improve your skin elasticity and appearance. It bring back the youthfulness, and is also beneficial for reducing cellulite and stretch marks!

STRONG & THICK HAIR

As a personal story; I didn’t know the effects of taking collagen were real for its beauty benefits until my friends, colleagues and hair stylist started making comments – asking what I was doing differently. I wasn’t just ‘seeing things’ – my hair became so much stronger, has natural shine, less breakage and a fraction of the shedding with the inclusion of 2-4 tablespoons of Bulletproof Collagen daily.

HEALTHY NAILS

Do you have peeling and splitting nails? A lack of collagen could be to blame. Collagen protein is a building block needed for nail health and adding collagen to your routine can work to keep your nails strong!

BETTER DIGESTION

Beauty benefits are grand, but a behind the scenes benefit for collagen doesn’t include improving your skin, hair or nail health. Collagen works to repair and heal the gut lining, and is a powerful addition to a Leaky Gut Healing Protocol. If stress is the downfall in your digestion, where you can eat a single green bean and get bloated while under stress, first remember that digestion is not a prioritized function when you’re in fight-or-flight mode. Take time to recharge, and an addition of collagen to your day may work to decrease digestive inflammation and heal the gut lining.

EXERCISE RECOVERY

When you go on a longer distance run or for a weightlifting session, you are putting tremendous strain on the body – which naturally causes inflammation. Good inflammation, but the kind that leaves you with the ‘two days after leg day’ pain. Collagen works to promote a healthy inflammatory response by speeding up the repair of your damaged connective tissues. Adding just 2 tablespoons of collagen powder to water, coffee or herbal tea makes for a functional pre-workout go-to and with noticeable benefits in decreasing recovery time on harder training days.

When it comes to supplementation, I’ll admit that I often forget to take my own probiotics because they’re in the fridge (excuses), and I sometimes neglect using my herbal tinctures which don’t all taste the best – but collagen is something I keep up and I encourage my clients and readers to stick with because of how easy it is to use.

I find it easiest to keep a collagen supplement in your workspace and/or kitchen. A good quality collagen powder will dissolve like cotton candy in water, whether it be hot or cold. There is no taste and no texture it’s also a easy way to add in some added protein (8g in 1 tbsp).

Why Your Ancestors Didn’t Have Anxiety Or Depression And You Do

Why Your Ancestors Didn’t Have Anxiety Or Depression And You Do

All humans were built with the “fight or flight” response and our ancestors were no different. Like everyone, our ancestors experienced anxiety and likely bouts of depression; the issue is that generalized anxiety disorder as well as well as depression has and continues to rise at an alarming rate. Generally speaking, our ancestors did experience anxiety and depression, but not to the disordered extent that many people do today. What was once a necessary and built in mechanism to protect us from danger has become a constant for some people.

Anxiety disorder wasn’t even diagnosed until 1980, not so long ago in the scope of medical diagnoses. While the root cause of anxiety and depression (which are often both present) is different for everyone, there are several dietary factors that contribute to these mental disorders.

Food: Fat, Inflammation, Toxins, Soil Depletion

Our ancestors, whether from one thousand or one hundred years ago, did not fear fat. The low-fat craze is still alive and well, just take a look around your grocery store. Skim milk, low-fat cheese and 0% yogurt are easier to get a hold of than their full-fat counterparts. While our ancestors ate lard, eggs and meat, many people have moved away from this ancestral diet and instead adopted a more plant based, high-carb, low-fat diet.

Not only are we not designed to eat this way, this type of eating has very real effects on the body and brain. Over half of our cells are made up of cholesterol, over 60% of the brain is made up of fat. If you’re not eating fat, and the right fats in particular, the brain suffers. A lack of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which are especially concentrated in fish oil, has been shown to cause mood disorders. Sarah Conklin, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar in Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh presented a study that showed low levels of EPA and DHA were related to mood impairment.

We were able to show that individuals who consumed more omega-3 fatty acids in their diets had more gray matter volume in areas of the brain important for regulating mood. These results suggest that these specific fats, certainly not fat in general, may confer a protective effect against depression and other mood-related problems.

And from Dr. Sears,

There are two omega-3 fatty acids in the brain. The first is called docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. This is primarily a structural component for the brain. The other is called eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA. This is the primary anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid for the brain. So if the levels of EPA are low in the blood, they are going to be low in the brain. To further complicate the matter, the lifetime of EPA in the brain is very limited (3,4). This means you have to have a constant supply in the blood stream to keep neuro-inflammation under control.

This new way of eating also contributes to inflammation. A high-grain, low-fat diet that employs the use of vegetable oils causes extreme inflammation. The omega-3 to omega-6 ratio should be about 3:1, instead it’s about 1:30 in modern diets. A lack of beneficial fats, like coconut oil, egg yolks, pastured butter and avocados only adds to the problem. According to Dr. Emily Deans,

…inflammatory cytokines also interfere with the regulation of another neurotransmitter, glutamate. Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that, if left to go wild, can pound our NMDA receptors in the brain and wreak major havoc. No one wants overexcited NMDA receptors, and clinical depression is one among many nasty brain issues that can be caused by overexcitement. Astrocytes, little clean-up cells in the brain, are supposed to mop up excess glutamate to keep it from going nutso on the NMDA. Turns out inflammatory cytokines interfere with the clean-up process.

Finally, inflammatory cytokines also push the brain from a general environment of happy “neuroplasticity” (mediated in part by a type of natural brain fertilizer called “BDNF“) towards an environment of neurotoxicity (sounds bad, and it is!).

Inflammation is one of the most damaging conditions for the brain (and well, everything else too!). It is absolutely necessary to eat the correct fats and quite a bit of them to quell inflammation. Foods high in EPA and DHA are wild seafood, pastured meat, organ meats and egg yolks. In Toxic Fat, Dr. Sears discusses the surge in anxiety and depression being linked to an imbalance of AA and EPA.

What causes AA to increase is a combination of increased consumption of vegetable oils rich in omega-6 fatty acids coupled with an increase in the consumption of refined carbohydrates that generate insulin. When excess omega-6 fatty acids interact with increased insulin, you get a surge of AA production. At the same time, our consumption of fish rich in EPA has decreased. The end result is an increasing AA/EPA ratio in the blood, which means a corresponding increase in the same AA/EPA ratio in the brain creating more cellular inflammation.

Food toxins also play a huge role in the onset of anxiety and depression. Not only do they contribute to inflammation, they alter the gut flora. While we are just beginning to understand the gut-brain connection, we know that whatever is occurring in the gut has a direct impact on the brain. From Harvard Medical School,

The brain has a direct effect on the stomach. For example, the very thought of eating can release the stomach’s juices before food gets there. This connection goes both ways. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person’s stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression. That’s because the brain and the gastrointestinal (GI) system are intimately connected — so intimately that they should be viewed as one system. (emphasis mine)

A recent study at UCLA demonstrated that yogurt intake could positively affect brain function, particularly feelings of anxiety. According to the researchers,

Four-week intake of an FMPP [fermented milk product with probiotic] by healthy women affected activity of brain regions that control central processing of emotion and sensation.

Considering food toxins like GMOs, vegetable oils, high sugar intake and processed ingredients negatively impact gut flora, it’s important to not only eliminate these ingredients but also take a high quality probiotic. While our ancestors regularly ate probiotics via fermented foods and soil, the modern diet is severely lacking.

Prior to soil depletion, soil used to be rich with magnesium. Our ancestors had a regular intake of magnesium from soil as well as bathing in and drinking water rich with magnesium. Unfortunately, soil and drinking water are no longer rich with magnesium.

Magnesium plays a hugely important role in the body; it is required for cell growth and development, normal blood pressure, enables thousands of biochemical processes, contributes to the proper functioning of muscles and nerves, and releases appropriate amount of serotonin in the brain. Without adequate magnesium, the brain will not properly release serotonin. This leads to both anxiety and depression.

I recommend a transdermal magnesium supplement; I personally use this magnesium oil lotion before bed. It is deeply relaxing and promotes restful sleep.

To mitigate the effects of anxiety and depression, eat as closely to nature as possible, like your ancestors did. No fad diets, no 100 calorie snack packs, no low-fat crap. Eat real food. My 21 Day Lifestyle Transformation includes meal plans, recipes and grocery lists to help you overhaul your diet in three weeks. If you suffer from anxiety and/or depression, or even if you just want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I suggest avoiding these foods:

  • sugar – especially refined sugars including high fructose corn syrup and agave nectar
  • unhealthy fats – cottonseed oil, canola oil, soy oil, corn oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil
  • GMOs
  • refined carbohydrates
  • wheat, gluten
  • inorganic meat and dairy

I also use essential oils to manage my own anxiety, stress and mood. You can find those here.

Also note that I didn’t even include other factors like sleep, stress, family life, community, etc. All of these are factors for depression and anxiety.

Why do we struggle so much with anxiety and depression when our ancestors didn't?! Find out what foods we should eliminate and which we should include to properly fuel brain function!

Why Your Ancestors Didn’t Have Acne And You Do

Why Your Ancestors Didn’t Have Acne And You Do

Of course some of our ancestors experienced the suckiness that is acne, but nothing like the amount of people that experience it today. Acne and prescriptions for acne have soared in recent years. From WebMD,

“Use of the powerful prescription acne drug Accutane has skyrocketed in recent years, despite controversy surrounding its side effects. In fact, a new study shows the drug is increasingly being used to treat milder forms of acne — even though it has only been approved to treat severe cases. According to research conducted by the FDA, the number of prescriptions filled at pharmacies rose by 250% between 1992 and 2000, and by 275% among users of major health plans.”

Two hundred and seventy five percent! That is a huge jump! As a previous acne sufferer as well as user of Accutane, a dangerous drug prescribed for acne, I have to wonder why exactly acne is on the rise, and why our ancestors largely had clear, unblemished skin.

The first reason: sugar.

While most dermatologists will tell you that diet is largely unrelated to acne, the opposite is true. Diet is the determining factor in whether or not a person will develop acne. Diet can affect acne for several reasons, inflammation, toxins, nutrient deficiencies and high blood sugar. Sugar consumption has steeply increased, just take a look at this chart from Stephan Guyenet of Whole Health Source:

Why Your Ancestors Didn't Have Acne But You Do - find out how diet and lifestyle factors can help clear acne and other skin issues!

Nuts, huh?

When sugar or high sugar foods are ingested, this causes blood glucose levels to rise, which leads to the production of insulin. Excess insulin not only leads to inflammation, but can trigger overproduction of oil, which leads to clogged pores and bacteria.

Sugar also feeds candida, or an overgrowth of yeast in the GI tract. Whatever is happening internally will reflect externally, which is why acne is an indication of a damaged GI tract. Candida and leaky gut are two causes of acne and were the reason my acne as a teen was so severe. Sugar consumption not only worsens these conditions, but feeds them. Sugar encourages yeast cells to proliferate and further damages the lining of the gut, allowing toxins and undigested food particles into the bloodstream. This can lead to anxiety, depression, allergies, autoimmune disorders and you guessed it: acne.

The second reason: toxins.

The colon, the liver, the blood, the lymphatic system, the kidneys and the skin are all eliminatory pathways. When these pathways become overwhelmed due to poor food choices and toxin overload, then the toxins are often eliminated through the skin, resulting in acne prone, sallow, discolored skin.

We are bombarded with toxins daily, from the air we breathe to the water we drink to the food we eat. We experience a bigger toxic load than any other generation in history. When the body becomes overloaded with toxins, it will often remove them through the skin.

The third reason: nutrient deficiencies and a damaged microbiome.

It’s no secret that the modern diet is lacking in beneficial and necessary nutrients. Vitamins A & D and E, as well as zinc and selenium are all necessary for healthy, clear skin. Vitamins A and E help fight free radicals. Vitamin A has been shown to reduce excess sebum production. Vitamin D improves insulin response and the immune system. Zinc is often lower in people with acne and studies have shown that zinc supplementation greatly improves acne. Selenium also acts an antioxidant and reduces inflammation.

Our ancestors ate fermented foods and bone broth, both of which are super foods. Fermented food provide us with necessary probiotics to balance the gut and therefore the skin. Bone broth seals the lining of the stomach and is rich in vitamins, minerals and collagen.

Ancestral diets were rich in unprocessed food, wild meats and seafoods, vegetables, fruits, nuts, ferments and broths. This is the basis of a healthy diet that will prevent acne (and serious diseases!).

The fourth and fifth reasons: stress and sleep.

It’s largely believed that our generation experience more stress and less sleep. We spend too much time working, not enough times relaxing and catching some Z’s. Acne is largely dependent upon proper hormone production, and stress and lack of sleep both increase levels of inflammation as well as interfere with hormones,

“According to a study in Sleep, the risk of psychological stress increases by 14% for every hour of sleep you lose a night. So what does this have to do with acne?

“Stress increases glucocorticoid production, which can lead to abnormalities in skin structure and function, exacerbating conditions like acne,” Says Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, a dermatologist in Danville, Calif.

Stress and sleep are closely linked; both can lead to insulin resistance and an overproduction of cortisol. Insulin resistance and an overproduction of cortisol not only increase inflammation, but also increase sebum (oil) production.

Our Ancestors

Dr. Weston A. Price spent years traveling the world and studying cultures that were untouched by modern civilization and therefore lived largely as our ancestors have always lived. They worked the land, ate in season, got sleep, played, and weren’t exposed to the myriad of toxins that we are exposed to today. In his book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Dr. Price found that of all the ancestral cultures he studied, none of them were plagued with the diseases we are plagued with today: heart disease, cancer, tooth decay, depression or acne.

According to Dr. Loren Cordain, acne affects 79% to 90% of the adolescent population. Cordain set out to study the Kitavan Islanders of Papua New Guinea and the Aché hunter-gatherers of Paraguay. These are two cultures, living on as their ancestors did and untouched by Western civilization. Cordain’s findings are significant because,

“Of 1200 Kitavan subjects examined (including 300 aged 15-25 years), no case of acne (grade 1 with multiple comedones or grades 2-4) was observed. Of 115 Aché subjects examined (including 15 aged 15-25 years) over 843 days, no case of active acne (grades 1-4) was observed.”

This is largely due to their unprocessed, local and organic diets.

“Both the Aché and Kitavan diets are composed of minimally processed plant and animal foods and are virtually devoid of typical Western carbohydrates that yield high glycemic loads that may acutely35 or chronically36,37 elevate insulin levels (Table 1). Recently acculturated hunter-gatherer populations who have adopted Western diets frequently are hyperinsulinemic and insulin resistant and have high rates of type 2 diabetes,81,82 whereas hunter-gatherer and less westernized populations living in their native environments rarely exhibit these symptoms,8385 including other unacculturated South American Indian tribes.”

Diet is one of the most significant factors when it comes to modern dis-eases, whether it be heart disease, cancer, obesity or acne. The reason these diseases largely did not affect our ancestors yet plague modern day civilization is because we have strayed so far from our ancestral roots. We don’t need to look for quick fixes, we don’t need to develop new pills or find cures, the answer is in our history. The cure is in prevention. We don’t need modern science, we need ancestral wisdom!

Why You Should Take Your Apple Cider Vinegar at Night

Why You Should Take Your Apple Cider Vinegar at Night

No doubt, you’ve seen them — lists touting the amazing curative power of apple cider vinegar for an amazing number of ills. “ACV” (as it’s sometimes referred to in studies) has been praised for its ability to balance your pH, increase good gut bacteria and help control your weight, as well as many other beneficial things.

Here’s the kicker: All those are true, and more besides. One of the most sensational is its ability to balance your blood sugar. A study1 at Arizona State University tested 11 volunteers with type 2 diabetes (diagnosed by a doctor) who weren’t taking insulin but continued taking their prescription medications.

Each participant took 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a snack — an ounce of cheese — before bedtime. The researchers demonstrated that in the morning, the study subjects had lower blood sugar readings than when they had the same snack with 2 tablespoons of water.

This is important and potentially life-changing news for half of the American population, as NBC News reports that half the country suffers from either high blood sugar or full-blown diabetes.

That’s a huge jump from the projection of 1 in 3 by 2050 made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010.2 Worse, half that number are unaware of how compromised their health really is.

More Studies Reveal: ACV Positively Impacts Blood Sugar Levels

A recent study5 showed that three groups — adults with pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and healthy people — after taking an ounce of ACV, all had lower blood glucose levels when they ate a high-carb meal consisting of a white bagel with butter and a glass of orange juice; again, compared with a placebo rather than the cider vinegar.

But there’s more: Those with pre-diabetes improved their blood glucose levels by almost half, and the subjects with type 2 diabetes cut their blood glucose levels by 25 percent.

Just as dramatic are the studies involving ACV’s potential for controlling weight. The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry reported a study6 on mice that were fed a high-fat diet along with the active ingredient in apple cider vinegar: acetic acid.

The animal subjects ended up with 10 percent lower body weight than the control subjects.

What this reveals, researchers assert, is that acetic acid can “turn on” trigger genes that initiate the enzymes’ ability to break down fat, which prevents weight gain. It also helps you feel full.

A study7 in Japan conducted a similar double-blind trial on obese adults, each with a similar body weight, waist measurement and body mass index (BMI), and split the subjects into three groups.

For 12 weeks, members of one group drank half an ounce of ACV. One group had a beverage with 1 ounce of ACV and the third group had a drink with no ACV. When the study was over, those who drank the cider vinegar had lower body weight and belly fat. Also smaller waist measurements and lower triglycerides compared to the others.

The scientists wrote: “In conclusion, daily intake of vinegar might be useful in the prevention of metabolic syndrome by reducing obesity.”

Apple Cider Vinegar’s Effects on Cancer Cells, Immune Support

Another thing apple cider vinegar provides is detoxification of your lymphatic system, which then helps optimize homeostatic function in your body. This may be as a result of the antioxidants in ACV reducing oxidative damage by free radicals, while improving both your blood and organs. The Truth About Cancer says:

“Cider vinegar was recently determined to be a strong antimicrobial agent and alternative to toxic and expensive chemical disinfectants. One of the most fatal bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is resistant to disinfectants but is found to be killed by acetic acid.

Especially in patients who are immunosuppressed, apple cider vinegar is an excellent natural antimicrobial tonic to rid of harmful bacteria and provide immune support.”8

Several test tube studies show that vinegar can kill cancer cells. Authority Nutrition9 cites several studies; one in particular in Japan used several types of fermented vinegars to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in leukemia cells.10

In another study, malignant breast and colon tumors, as well as lung, bladder and prostate cancers.

Vinegar Punch (or Drizzle) Recipes for Digestive Health and Sore Throat

If you’ve had problems such as colitis, ulcers or acid reflux. A double whammy of apple cider vinegar with the added bonus of fermented veggies has the potential to ease several kinds of stomach problems.

The mild acid in fermentation is lactic acid rather than acetic acid, to help improve your gut microbiome. Animal studies have proven helpful when researchers want to test apple cider vinegar on digestion. In one study, Health.com reports:12

“Apple cider vinegar may also be a boon to digestive health. Based on the results of a study done on mice with ulcerative colitis.

The researchers found that when acetic acid was added to their drinking water. They had higher levels of good bacteria in their guts. Such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, and reduced symptoms of the gastrointestinal disease.”13

For everyday gut health. Mixture of 2 teaspoons of ACV with a teaspoon of raw honey in a cup of warm water will help. ACV with honey and ginger for a sore throat is a popular and effective remedy. Another mixture for sore throat, recommended by Bonnie K. McMillen, a nurse from the University of Pittsburgh,14 includes:

  • 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • 1 Tbsp. raw honey
  • ¼ tsp. ground ginger
  • Optional: ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper

It works! Rather than drinking ACV straight. For other applications, dilute it in a few teaspoons (or a cup) of water to help mask the flavor. Admittedly is a bit stringent.

ACV for Beauty, Health and a Few Other Things

Many people claim that drinking a tablespoon of ACV helps get rid of hiccups.

To reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process. You need to soak a cloth in apple cider vinegar and place it directly onto the bruise.

Being highly acidic, apple cider vinegar alters pH levels to the better. Like in the case of dry skin and dandruff. As such, it is useful for bug bites, acne, burns, toning the skin, wounds, warts, sunburn, dandruff, Athlete` s foot, poison ivy, and toenail fungus.

Ultimately, apple cider vinegar has a wide range of household uses, such as for cleaning and cooking. To clean your toothbrush for instance. Mix two tablespoons of ACV, two teaspoons of baking soda, and one-half cup of water. To increase the overall flavor of your meals, add a tablespoon or two of vinegar to them.

Why You Should Massage Your Feet before Going to Bed

Why You Should Massage Your Feet before Going to Bed
Sharing is caring!

After a long, busy day of standing up and walking around, a nice foot massage is something everyone should enjoy. Besides helping you relax, foot massage has many therapeutic benefits for both physical and mental health.

In reflexology, an alternative medicine, foot massage is a crucial component. Your feet have several nerve endings called reflexes that correspond to different systems and organs within your body. These reflexes have therapeutic effects when activated through massage.

In fact, health experts favor foot massage to improve general health. There are many studies that support its benefits for people of all ages.

A 2002 study published in Nursing & Health Sciences highlighted the positive effects of foot massage, noting that it promotes a healthy lifestyle for all age groups and particularly enhances blood circulation, relaxation and one’s own healing power.

For a simple foot massage, you don’t need a professional masseur. You can do it yourself, and the best time is before going to bed.

1. Improves Blood Circulation

Circulation in the feet is often impaired by tight and uncomfortable shoes that you wear most of the day. Also, the muscles in your feet hardly get any exercise, which contributes to poor circulation.

To improve circulation to the lower extremities, massage is one the best options.

A 10- to 20-minute foot massage before going to bed can greatly improve circulation in the lower extremities. This is very important for diabetics, who are at a higher risk of developing peripheral neuropathy.

This problem occurs when tissues and nerves in the extremities, like the hands and feet, don’t get enough nutrients and oxygen due to poor circulation. This can lead to numbness, tingling and burning sensations.

A 2014 study published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation points out that massage improved vascular function in people who had not exercised. This means massage has benefits for people regardless of their level of physical activity.

Restricted blood flow can cause heart and kidney problems, high blood pressure, varicose veins and organ damage in the long term.

2. Promotes Sound Sleep

Day-to-day challenges keep our minds overly active at the end of the day, preventing us from enjoying sound sleep. To help the body unwind and encourage restful sleep, a short foot massage is very helpful. However, a full-body massage before going to bed is ideal.

The whole process of massage stimulates the reflexes along the meridians and promotes the free flow of energy. This offers deep relaxation and helps you sleep soundly.

A 2014 study published in the Iranian Journal of Critical Care Nursing reports that foot massage improves sleep quality in heart patients, and it is highly recommended for improving sleep quality in patients with ischemic heart disease.

3. Fights Stress and Anxiety

Most of us feel stressed or anxious from time to time. Foot massage can help reduce stress and anxiety. It does more than just put you in a relaxed state of mind.

Applying pressure to specific reflexes on the feet creates a response in the nervous system and promotes relaxation. These responses may result in reduced stress and anxiety.

The solar plexus reflex, in particlular, helps relieve stress. To help locate this point, squeeze the sides of your foot together. You will find the point at the center of this scrunched area.

A 2012 study published in BMC Nursing showed that foot massage improved mood, reduced anxiety and lowered blood pressure in long-term care staff working with older people with dementia.

To deal with day-to-day stress and anxiety, foot massage serves as an effective and easy remedy.

4. Alleviates Low-Back Pain

Those who suffer from low-back pain should massage their feet daily before bedtime. Massage should be done using the thumbs to press along the arch of the foot for about 5 minutes.

A 2012 study published in the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research reports that foot reflexology is effective in reducing the severity of chronic back pain. It offers better results than massaging the lower back itself.

Low-back pain can make it difficult to enjoy sound sleep. Once the pain is reduced with foot massage, you can enjoy restful and pain-free sleep.

5. Reduces Foot and Other Chronic Pain

A good foot massage can relax your feet, stretch and soothe the muscles, and reduce swelling that causes pain.

A 2014 study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that reflexology was effective at reducing pain and inducing relaxation in people with conditions including whiplash injury and chronic pain.

Another 2014 study by the American Society for Pain Management Nursing reports that foot massage in breast surgery patients was effective in postoperative pain management.

6. Lowers Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can cause a host of other problems. A regular foot massage can help lower your blood pressure, in turn reducing your risk of other health conditions.

A 2016 study published in PLOS One reports that self-administered aroma foot massage significantly decreased the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It also reduced the state anxiety score and tended to increase the mental health-related quality of life scores.

7. Prevents Lower-Leg Edema

Lower-leg edema occurs due to an accumulation of fluid in the legs, which results in swollen, painful and stiff legs. Pregnancy and poor blood circulation are some of the common causes of edema.

Edema can make it difficult and painful to move around and even cause sleep disturbance.

While light exercise like walking, swimming or stretching can help a lot, a foot massage will also provide quick relief from the symptoms.

A 2010 study published in the International Journal of Nursing Practice reports that foot massage is effective in treating edema in pregnant women.

How to Massage Your Feet

Unlike many other body parts, you can easily give yourself a foot massage without relying on others. You just need less than half an hour of your time to reap the benefits of regular foot massage.

  1. Fill a large bowl with warm water and add 2 to 5 drops of any essential oil of your choice.
  2. Soak your feet in it for 10 to 20 minutes, then pat dry your feet with a soft towel.
  3. Now, sit in a comfortable chair.
  4. Rest the sole of your right foot on your left knee.
  5. Apply some warm oil on your right foot. You can use coconut, olive or mustard oil.
  6. Rub the oil around while giving your foot a nice massage. Make sure to move your fingers back and forth along the bottom of your foot.
  7. Once you have massaged the sole, focus on the toes. Squeeze, extend and flex your toes to increase their flexibility.
  8. Repeat the massage on your left foot.

Why You Need To Eat Avocado Every Day!

Why You Need To Eat Avocado Every Day!
Avocados

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Avocado is one of nature’s little miracles. This amazing veggie is something that we should consume several times a week because it contains tons of nutrients that will help improve our health in many different ways.

We strongly recommend you to continue reading in order to find out what makes Avocado so special.

  1. Avocados Won’t Make You Fat!

You are absolutely wrong if you are still avoiding avocados because of some left-over-from-the-80’s belief that avocados will make you fat. You are also missing a good portion of monounsaturated fat, which is known for its ability to improve heath health.

Moreover, the high fiber content of avocados can also help you feel full longer. Numerous studies conducted in recent years have shown that meals which include avocados tend to increase the feeling of satiety. For that reason, everyone who is trying to lose weight must include a few slices of avocado into its daily diet.

  1. Avocados Are Rich In Nutrients

In addition to the above-mentioned monounsaturated fat and fiber, avocados are also packed with plenty of other health-boosting nutrients, such as protein, omega 3s, vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C, E, and K, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, and iron.

  1. They Do Amazing Things For Your Long-Term Health

All those nutrients that avocados contain will help our brains to function at their optimal capacity. These nutrients will also help reduce the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, and even some types of cancer.

What’s more, the combination of good fats and high fiber content will lower the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase the HDL (cholesterol), help normalize the blood pressure, and reduce inflammation throughout the entire body.

With all these health benefits, it’s easy to see why avocado is part of the category of superfoods.

  1. Avocados Play Well With Others

With their specific fresh green flavor and creamy, avocados can be practically mixed with any food you can imagine. What’s better, one study has even found that avocados can increase the absorption of carotenoids, the compounds found in orange and red fruits and veggies that can protect against some types of cancer.

Here are a few ways in which you can include avocado into your diet:

  • Add a quarter of avocado to your morning shake.
  • Enjoy an avocado half as a nutrient-rich side dish with your morning eggs instead of toast or potatoes.
  • Add a few slices of avocado on a toasted paleo bread for a quick mid-day snack.
  • Add avocado to your lunchtime salad to keep you satiated until dinner.
  • Add a few chunks of avocado to your soup in order to increase the nutrient content.
  • Blend some avocado with water, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric to use it as a salad dressing or as a sauce for chicken and fish dishes.
  • Top egg dishes, chicken, or fish with mashed avocado.
  • Blend up nutrient-rich baby food by combining avocado with fruits and veggies of your choice to give your little one a healthy start of the day.

  1. Treat Them Right And They’ll Return The Favor

Sometimes it can be quite difficult to find an avocado that you can eat for tonight’s dinner, which is why a bit of planning in advance is necessary. The biggest fans of avocado recommend buying a few firm ones at a time and then strategically staggering the ripening process so the avocados are ready when you are – and don’t all turn ripe at the same time.

To speed up the ripening process, AvocadoCentral.com recommends sealing two avocados into a brown paper bag, along with a ripe banana and a ripe apple. Over the course of 2-3 days, the fruits will release gas, which will make the avocado brown on the outside and soft to squeeze. Remove the ready-to-eat avocado, replace it with a firm one, and repeat.

Tips:

  • Conventionally grown avocados are part of the Environmental Working Group’s Clean 15 List. This means that they’re relatively free of pesticides, and are a good alternative to organic options.

  • How you cut and peel your avocado is more important than you think. To do it properly, wash the outer skin and pat dry. Cut in half lengthwise. Remove the seed using a spoon or tap a knife across the top of the seed to slightly imbed it and twist. Instead of scooping out the fruit, you should gently peel off the skin with your fingers in order to get the most of the nutrient content. Turns out, the dark green fruit closest to the skin is the most nutritious.

Why I’m Obsessed With Oil Pulling

Why I’m Obsessed With Oil Pulling

WTH is oil pulling?

It’s actually really simple. Oil pulling is just swishing oil around your mouth for about twenty minutes. Since it has antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, coconut oil is my favorite to use (and tastes best). It’s actually an ancient Ayurvedic tradition that has ancestral roots. Like so many ancient traditions, it fell out of favor and people now resort to teeth cleanings, teeth bleaching, harsh mouthwashes and toxic, fluoride-filled toothpaste.

What are the benefits?

I know oil pulling may seem completely odd. How could swishing oil around your mouth for twenty minutes be so beneficial?

First, understand that the health of your mouth effects the entire body. Not only are you swallowing the bacteria (both good and bad) that is present in your mouth, but oral health can also play a role in heart and overall health. Harmful bacteria in the mouth can be transmitted to the bloodstream, making its way to distant parts of your body and causing chronic inflammation. From Dr. Mercola,

There is one bacterium that has been causing a great deal of trouble with people’s health: Fusobacterium nucleatum, a spindle-shaped anaerobic bacterium commonly found in dental plaque. F. nucleatum is abundant in your mouth and able to coaggregate with other species.8 Three recent studies have linked F. nucleatum with serious health problems:

  1. Case Western Reserve University researchers found that some malignant colorectal tumors are caused by F. nucleatum9

  2. Harvard researchers also established a link between F. nucleatum and the initiation of colorectal tumors10

  3. A study in Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that oral F. nucleatum can lead to intrauterine infection and even stillbirth11

The bacteria that is commonly found in gum disease has also shown to be present in blood vessels going through atherosclerosis and according to Sam Low, DDS,

Inflammation is another common denominator for both diseases. When people have moderate to severe gum disease, their levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein that rises during whole-body inflammation, increase. CRP levels are also used to assess a person’s risk of a heart attack.

So proper oral health is preettyyyy important. Oil pulling helps:

  • gingivitis
  • halitosis (bad breath)
  • sinus infections
  • acne
  • teeth stains
  • yellow teeth
  • reduce inflammation
  • prevent heart disease
  • prevent cancer
  • strengthen the teeth and gums
  • prevent and heal cavities

How does oil pulling work?

Like I mentioned earlier, I like to use coconut oil for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is why it is so potent, making it the perfect oil to use for oil pulling. Because oil is viscous, it is able to penetrate deep into the gums and between teeth. It is able to reach places that flossing and brushing are unable to.

Bacteria and plaque are often lodged deep within the gums, mouthwash can’t reach these parts because it isn’t viscous at all. The act of swishing oil around your mouth for twenty minutes dislodges this bacteria and plaque, making your mouth (and body) a lot healthier.

My experience with oil pulling:

I love it. I recently overheard a fellow bride say that she was spending a ton of money getting teeth whitenings before her wedding. If I weren’t across the room from her and it wouldn’t have been totally obvious that I was eavesdropping, I would have told her to just oil pull!

My teeth have gotten so much whiter and continue to do so and while I had really bad teeth growing up from such a poor diet, I haven’t been to the dentist in years. Just make sure to use a good brand of coconut oil, you can find one HERE.

Why I'm Obsessed with Oil Pulling - whether you want to naturally whiten your teeth, prevent cavities or improve oral health, you need to try oil pulling!
